91ΑΤΖζ Return of Title IV Funds Policy

Students who withdraw from all coursework before completing the semester may be subject to a Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) calculation. This calculation determines how much federal financial aid was earned based on the length of time the student attended classes. Any unearned financial aid must be returned, which may reduce the student's financial aid and result in a balance owed to 91ΑΤΖζ.

Federal aid programs affected by this policy include Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Federal Direct Subsidized Loans, Federal Direct PLUS Loans, Federal Pell Grants, Iraq/Afghanistan Service Grants, and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG).

The Return of Title IV Funds calculation is separate from 91ΑΤΖζ's institutional refund policy. A student may owe a balance to 91ΑΤΖζ even if institutional charges are reduced or refunded.

There are two types of student withdrawals: official withdrawals and unofficial withdrawals.

Official Withdrawal

A student is considered to have officially withdrawn if:

  • The student submits an Add/Drop form to the Student Hub to withdraw from all enrolled courses or notifies 91ΑΤΖζ of their intent to withdraw. The withdrawal date will be the earliest documented date of notification. If 91ΑΤΖζ is notified of the student's intent to withdraw before the withdrawal process begins, the earlier date will be used as the withdrawal date.
  • The student submits Add/Drop forms to the Student Hub throughout the semester, resulting in the student no longer being enrolled in any courses. The withdrawal date is the latest effective date of withdrawal.

91ΑΤΖζ will perform the Return of Title IV Funds calculation as soon as possible, but no later than 30 days after 91ΑΤΖζ’s determination that the student withdrew.  Any unearned Title IV funds will be returned no later than 45 days after 91ΑΤΖζ's date of determination that the student withdrew.

A student is not considered to have withdrawn if the student successfully completes coursework that meets one of the withdrawal exemptions provided under federal regulations, including:

  • Successfully completing all graduation requirements; or
  • Successfully completing one or more blocks/modules that comprise at least 49% of the total number of days in the semester; or
  • Successfully completing half-time coursework (6+ credits); or
  • Providing written confirmation of attendance in a later block/module during the same semester.

 Unofficial Withdrawal

A student is considered to have unofficially withdrawn if they receive only non-passing grades for the semester (F, U, W, and I grades) and cease participation in academically related activities before completing the semester.   Examples of academically related activities may include attending class, submitting assignments, participating in discussions, taking examinations, or other documented academic engagement.  The last date of attendance for an unofficial withdrawal is determined based on the student’s latest documented date of academically related activity reported by instructors during grade submission. If the student earns a passing grade in a course, the course end date may be used as evidence of attendance through the end of that course.

Unofficial withdrawals are identified within 30 days after the end of each semester. Any unearned Title IV funds will be returned as soon as possible, but no later than 45 days after 91ΑΤΖζ's date of determination that the student withdrew.

Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) Calculation

Students earn federal financial aid in proportion to the number of days they attend during the semester. For programs offered in modules or semester blocks, the Return of Title IV Funds calculation includes only the days in the modules or blocks in which the student began attendance.

All Title IV aid is subject to a return of funds up to the 60% point of the semester.  After that point, all aid is considered β€œearned” and will not be returned.  Title IV aid is returned in the following order:

  • Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans
  • Federal Direct Subsidized Loans
  • Federal Direct PLUS Loans
  • Federal Pell Grants
  • Iraq/Afghanistan Service Grant
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

If the calculation of Return of Title IV Funds requires the student to return a portion of unearned financial aid received, 91ΑΤΖζ will return the funds on the student’s behalf along with any funds 91ΑΤΖζ must return. The student will receive a letter to their home mailing address when a calculation has been completed indicating the amount of unearned financial aid that was returned, the current account balance, and the student’s options for repayment.  The student is also advised to complete Exit Loan Counseling on the Federal Student Aid website if they have incurred any student loan debt.

In some cases, a student may be eligible for a post-withdrawal disbursement (PWD). A post-withdrawal disbursement occurs when the amount of Title IV aid earned under the Return of Title IV Funds calculation exceeds the amount disbursed before the student withdrew. If a student is eligible for a PWD, 91ΑΤΖζ will notify the student. Any eligible grant funds will be disbursed no later than 45 days after the date of 91ΑΤΖζ's determination that the student withdrew.  Any eligible loan funds will be offered to the student, or to the parent in the case of a Direct PLUS Loan, within 30 days of 91ΑΤΖζ's determination that the student withdrew.  Notification of eligibility for a PWD will be sent to the student's 91ΑΤΖζ email account, or to the parent in the case of a Direct PLUS Loan.  The notification will provide the opportunity to accept or decline all or a portion of the loan funds.  The student or parent must notify 91ΑΤΖζ within 14 days of the notification whether they wish to accept all or a portion of the loan funds.  If no response is received by the 14-day deadline, the post-withdrawal loan disbursement will not be made.  Post-withdrawal loan funds accepted by the student or parent may be applied to outstanding institutional charges and will be made no later than 180 days after the date 91ΑΤΖζ determined the student withdrew. Any resulting Title IV credit balance will be paid directly to the student, or to the parent in the case of a Direct PLUS Loan, within 14 days of the credit balance being created.   A student or parent is only eligible for a PWD of Federal Direct Loan funds if all conditions for late disbursement were met and all requirements for receiving the loan were satisfied before the date 91ΑΤΖζ determined the student withdrew.

If a student drops all classes during the 100% refund period and receives a full refund of all institutional charges, the full refund withdrawal exemption will be applied, and the student will be treated as though they never began attendance for Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) purposes. If any institutional charges remain, an R2T4 calculation will be performed to determine whether the student is eligible for a post-withdrawal disbursement.

91ΑΤΖζ uses the U.S. Department of Education's Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) worksheet to determine the amount of aid earned and the amount of aid that must be returned. Students may request a detailed copy of their Return of Title IV Funds calculation from the Student Hub.
